At PS 1, we proudly implement MindUP, a CASEL program developed by the Goldie Hawn Foundation, designed for students in Pre-K–5 to build mindfulness, emotional regulation, and empathy. The curriculum includes 15 lessons across four units—Getting Focused, Sharpening Your Senses, It’s All About Attitude,and Taking Mindful Action—and centers on the daily “Brain Break” breathing practice to reduce stress and improve focus. Backed by over a decade of research and multiple randomized studies, MindUP has shown significant gains in prosocial behavior, executive functioning, and academic self-concept. Through comprehensive teacher training, family engagement, and strategies addressing bias and equity, PS 1 uses MindUP to create a calm, inclusive, and emotionally supportive learning environment.
